Fun Runs

By Danielle Hicks on Jul 28, 10 11:16 AM

HIGHWAY retained the Mike Fletcher Shield when they repeated last season's triumph in the Coventry District under-9s softball tournament staged at Corley CC. And Alvis will also go through to the county finals after being edged out in an epic final, falling just five runs short of the holders' 245 tally.

Neither of the finalists won their groups in the round-robin phase, Coventry & North Warwickshire finishing top of Group One ahead of Alvis, Pak Shaheen and Bablake Old Boys while Corley took the honours from Highway, Standard and the Superstars. But in the semi-finals, Highway's 289, featuring 18 from Taylor Thornton, was too much for C&NW who closed on 265 while Alvis logged 261 with 20 from William Gardiner before restricting Corley to 210.

Taylor Thornton and Kieran Holland were named as the boys' players of the tournament while Laura Wood and Mollie Webb shared the girls' prizes and the following players were selected for the Coventry CCB development squad: Wlliam Gardiner, Robbie McArthur, Thomas Rouse, Alex Dalby, Pavan Bhabra (Alvis), Joshua Blaylock, Cameron Mitchell, Jack Smith, Ryan Smith, Alfie Bates (Bablake Old Boys), Spencer Sawbridge, Kieran Holland, Thomas Parker, James Nicholson, Rhys Nicholson (Corley), Ibrahim Afzal, Harry Westcott-Davies, Sam Starkie, Karamvir Nanuwa (C&NW), Taylor Thornton, Samuel Startup, Matthew Vickers, Tom Greenman- (Highway), Owais Ul Rahman, Muneeb Zaheer (Pak Shaheen), Cain Shaw, William Hawker, Kallan Shaw (Standard).
