THE impact of austerity and tough economic times on Coventry has been outlined in a report showing a growing gap between the richest and poorest cities.

The think-tank Centre for Cities' report came days before latest GDP figures showed the UK economy slipping ominously back into negative growth - towards a possible "double dip" recession.

The two developments are no coincidence. The Cities Outlook 2012 report states our 64 urban centres account for 58 per cent of all private sector employment and 56pc of the population. So if cities are struggling, so too will the UK economy.

The report suggested the dual scourge of long-term joblessness and youth unemployment is hitting Coventry three times as hard as the best performing cities.

As a middling city performer, the report provides a glimmer of hope for when the upturn eventually comes.
